Smolins (partricle physicist) book is really good re philosophical discussion about the nature of matter and the very latest theories. Kauffman (theoretical biologist) is great on the mathematical (nets and geometry) basis to the laws of complexity - let me know if you would like to borrow this. Doesn't say much about just getting through each day though!!!
